Mervyn King announces new Boulton & Watt banknote at exhibition launch
The Governor of the Bank of England, Mervyn King, unveiled the designs for a new Boulton & Watt £50 note at the launch of the Matthew Boulton: Selling what all the world desires exhibition at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery on May 29.
Mr King said: 'Just as the Bank of England plays an essential role in the economy as the United Kingdom's central bank, so too did Boulton and Watt's steam engines and their many other innovations as essential factors in the nation's industrial revolution'.
The banknote will go into circulation in around 18 months time.

Matthew Boulton Trail launched
May 21 sees the publication of a new Matthew Boulton trail leaflet featuring a Birmingham city centre walk and a guide to Boulton-related sites and landmarks around the city.
The trail leaflet is available from all Birmingham museums, libraries and tourist information centres and a downloadable version is available online (see the Resources section of this website).

Matthew Boulton book published by Yale University Press
A handsome new book, Matthew Boulton: Selling what all the World Desires, has been published by Yale University Press.
Edited by Boulton expert Shena Mason, and with contributions from specialists in various fields, the book accompanies the exhibition of the same name at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery (May 30 - Sept 27) and also incorporates the catalogue for the exhibition.
Matthew Boulton: Selling what all the World Desires is available from all of the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery shops, price £35.00.

Matthew Boulton included in the new Pioneers of the Industrial Revolution postage stamp issue
Matthew Boulton is one of the famous names featured in the Royal Mail's new Pioneers of the Industrial Revolution postage stamp issue.
Boulton and his business partner James Watt appear on the two first class stamps.
The other pioneers featured are Josiah Wedgwood, Richard Arkwright, George Stephenson, Henry Maudslay, James Brindley and John MacAdam.
The stamps will be on sale from March 10 2009.
